Hypnosis
We've all heard of hypnosis, but how many of us have an accurate idea of its use? Hypnosis has nothing to do with what can be seen on stage where performers try to manipulate people into acting in silly ways. Unfortunately, much of the public knowledge of hypnosis is based on such shows, which very often leads to a fear of hypnosis.
These delusions do nothing more than give hypnosis a bad name, and none actually has anything to do with the hypnotherapy used to help people overcome the distressing symptoms that make their life a misery.
The word itself comes from the Greek word 'hypnos' which means sleep, however hypnosis is not sleep, nor is it being fully awake. Hypnosis induces a feeling of sleep and lethargy in the body, a kind of super relaxed state, yet at the same time, the individual is mentally very aware.
So really hypnosis is a pleasant and natural state that occurs quite frequently. It's a natural state of relaxation similiar to daydreaming or when you're completely absorbed in activities such as:
- Watching TV
- Reading
- Driving on a familiar route
At the time you are aware, know where you are, can hear people talking to you, but you remain completely absorbed in what you are doing. So in affect, it's a state we are all in at some time during our normal daily routines.
